The use of drugs and alcohol at work can pose serious short-term and long-term risks that threaten the health and safety of workers and others in the workplace. The risks include a higher probability of accidents, interpersonal conflicts, unprofessional behaviour, reduced productivity, lower staff morale, absenteeism, and health-related financial costs. It is important for workers to be aware of the dangers of drug and alcohol use and the potential impacts on their work.

This course is designed for use by staff at all levels of an organisation, and explains the risks involved with drug and alcohol use while emphasising the need to comply with relevant workplace drug and alcohol policies.

What the course covers

The Workplace Drug and Alcohol Awareness course covers the following major subject areas:

• Introduction to the risks of drug and alcohol
• Examples of negative consequences at work
• Understanding short-term and long-term risks
• Legal obligations for employers and workers
• The importance of following workplace policies
• What is meant by the term ‘workplace’
• Drug and alcohol use outside the workplace
• How your drug or alcohol use affects others
• Specific dangers related to the use of alcohol
• The dangers of prescription drugs/medicines
• The risks associated with smoking or vaping
• Dangers of cannabis and other illicit drugs.

Course structure and delivery

This course is delivered as an online self-paced training module. The module consists of 21 screens of content followed by an assessment of randomised questions. Participants must answer all questions correctly in order to complete the course, and may review content and re-attempt the assessment until it has been passed. Most people will complete the course in 25 to 30 minutes. After completion, a personalised certificate can be printed.
